FITTER | HAPPIER: Water Safety as Main Priority with Summer Fast Approaching

On this week's program about your health-for your health- the topic we're focusing on is Water Safety after The Royal Lifesaving Society of W.A. delivered their new Don't Drink and Drown and Keep Watch campaigns as the heat currently makes its mark and the Annual Leavers Week fast approaches...

In Summer it's important to be soaking up the Sun, Sand and Surf-but with an increase of water activity and recreation it's even more important to be increasing an awareness in water safety to.
Recent studies show that each year in W.A an average of 4 people aged 15-24 lose their life to drowning, with another ten being hospitalised following non-fatal drowning incidents. Alcohol often plays a significant factor in contributing to these incidents with reports revealing up to 30% of deaths occurred by drowning included alcoholic intake of some kind...and it's not just this particular demographic at risk either, as other studies reveal also each year an average of four children in W.A. under the age of 5years old have reportedly died via drowning....not only in our waves and beaches, but in our backyards, bathtubs and rivers too!

But the good news is that through particular Strategies, Programs and learning First-Aid...Drowning is, and can be, preventable! Here speaking a more professional level in regards to water safety-including strategies, programs and advice in avoiding and preventing such incidents-is the Acting Principle Policy Officer for the Department of Health's Injury Prevention Team: Mr. Russ Milner...
