From Freo Slums to Waitlists

Monday 13th July / presented by Chris Wheeldon

Benefits Street, Struggle Street, Life on the Dole – there has been a number of shows both in Australia and overseas focusing on what life is really like for people living in under-resourced communities.

While these observational documentaries shed light on daily hardships, what is the reality of being homeless or living in public housing?

Currently, over 20, 000 applicants are on the public housing waitlist and concerns are also growing in the Fremantle area near Leach Highway.

Tenants are paying private rental rates of up to $150 for a one bedroom and $230 for a two bedroom to maintain income flow to the Department of Housing and a private contractor.

Shadow Housing Minister Fran Logan explained.
