Will a minimum floor price for alcohol reduce harm in the community?

Thursday 21st September / presented by Chris Mason

Health Minster Roger Cook has said that every 27 minutes a person in WA is hospitalized for an alcohol-related condition, and believes that these alarmingly low alcohol prices are directly related to not only alcohol harm, but mental illness and obesity. Because of these findings the state government is considering in introducing a minimum floor price for alcohol; which means ultra-cheap bottles of wine cannot be sold.

Executive Officer of the McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth, Julia Stafford, believes that setting a minimum price would reduce consumption in heavy drinks whilst also having a little impact on moderate drinks. Stafford spoke to us today to talk about the implications regarding alcohol consumption, as well as the effects pricing can have on alcoholic intake.
