Image Based Abuse Study

Tuesday 9th May / posted by Chris Wheeldon

If you’ve ever had a naked selfie or explicit photo shared without your consent, you’re not alone.

In fact, one in five of you have experienced what’s called ‘image based abuse’.

RMIT and Monash University have published Australia’s first ever comprehensive look at the phenomenon known as ‘Revenge Porn’.

The survey of more than 4,200 people shows over 20% of people have experienced the non-consensual creation of nude or sexual images, while 11% have experienced non-consensual sharing of these photos.

Most victims are young people aged between 16 and 29, and Indigenous Australians and people with disabilities.

Dr Nicola Henry from RMIT University Centre For Global Research Principal Research speaks with us.
