Imprison or Treat?

Thursday 7th February / posted by Chris Wheeldon

A report for The Australian National Council on Drugs said more than $100,000 can be saved each year if non-violent Indigenous offenders are placed into treatment rather than prison.

The Council says it’s a moral failing of governments that spend money on incarceration instead of treatment. Gamarada is a community developed, healing program motivated by the recognition of unmet needs and lost potential among men in Redfern.

The program aims to empower Aboriginals within their wider community, equip them with practical skills and build greater respect for Aboriginality.

Its Chair Ken Zulumovski was there to look at the report and its recommendations.
