Law And Order By The Military

Monday 16th December / presented by Rewi Lyall

Australia’s Defence Forces are highly trained, tactically, strategically and physically, to protect us from aggression and to pursue international strategic goals on behalf of the Commonwealth.

Whether it’s war making or peace keeping, the ADF applies skills from active military campaigns to civil engineering works.

How appropriate is it, though, to take those skills and turn them on Australians?

Whether it’s the Northern Territory intervention or a range of activities across the Kimberley, is it appropriate to use the ADF to develop or intervene in Aboriginal communities instead of employing non-military Australians to do so?

Is it OK to drop a veil of military secrecy over how Australia responds to unarmed and impoverished asylum seekers?

And what does it say of our society that a former soldier is appointed to oversee domestic policing?

Dr. James Page holds a PhD in Peace Education, and has taught extensively in a range of settings both within Australia and overseas.

He is an internationally recognized authority within the field of Peace Education, and is currently Australian Co-ordinator for an international research project examining the social attitudes to peace and war.

He discussed this issue extensively this morning with Rewi Lyall.
