LGBQT Community Slams ‘Safe Schools’ Newest Celebrity Campaign

Thursday 4th May / posted by Chris Wheeldon

A number of high profile Australian musicians have signed a petition to reincarnate the Safe Schools program in a form that those it’s meant to help aren’t happy with.

Members of the LGBT+ community criticised the wording of the petition using phrases like ‘mutual tolerance’, which many considered offensive as well as detrimental to the campaign.

The question is, ultimately does it help or hinder?

GetUp Safe Schools Campaigner Sally Rugg made clear that “You cannot be a rich, cisgender celebrity and call for a program to replace Safe Schools that seeks ‘only tolerance’."

Sally joined Paul Hunt in the studio to discuss the campaign.
