Martin Place Wasn’t Such a Sight to See…

Tuesday 9th April / posted by Chris Wheeldon

Recycling should be coming pretty naturally to us these days – certainly you’d think we’re better than ever before…

Perhaps.

This morning, almost 16 thousand bottles and cans were dumped in Martin Place in Sydney.

This huge number represents not a weeks’ worth of litter or even a day, but the number of containers landfilled or just chucked away by Australians every single minute - around 8 billion in a year.

Clearly the kerbside recycling system available to most of us isn’t enough to fix the problem of litter.

This morning’s mass littering draws attention to the proposed national initiative of a 10-cent container deposit system, and we talk now to Executive Director of Total Environment Jeff Angel about the ins and outs of the scheme.
