Festive Health

We look forward to the festive season as a happy and joyous time, where we can catch up with friends and family to celebrate the holidays.

For most of us, all we have to worry about is buying presents for everyone on our list, deciding what to wear to the office Christmas party or having the in-laws stay with us for the week.

However, it can be a stressful and dangerous time of year for those who suffer from a mental illness or addiction issues.

The holiday season can make these worse – the free time away from work or school can fuel the need to ‘feed the beast’.

Monash University’s Professor Jayshri Kulkarni’s research has shown that early signs of new mental conditions can begin to appear during the festive season.
