Ned Kelly: a cultural icon depicted

Friday 3rd August / presented by James Hall

Sidney Nolan’s 1946-47 paintings on the theme of the 19th-century bushranger Ned Kelly are one of the greatest series of Australian paintings of the 20th century. Nolan’s starkly simplified depiction of Kelly in his homemade armour has become an iconic Australian image

This must see series of 26 works is on short-term loan to the Art Gallery of WA. The show offers a rare opportunity to view this renowned sequence depicting the story of the fabled bush outlaw Kelly, demonstrating Nolan’s characteristic bold and expressive sense of landscape and vivid storytelling.

James Hall spoke with coordinating curator Melissa Harpley about the upcoming exhibition.
