Over-Prescription and Pathogen Resistance

Wednesday 22nd May / presented by Fiona Bartholomaeus

The latest AURA report from the Australian Commision for Safety and Quality in Health Care has revealed that antibiotic prescription has fallen for the first time in two decades; however, the report also revealed that antibiotics continue to be over-prescribed and often unnecessarily.

This misuse is leading to resistance in common pathogens, meaning that frequently occurring ailments that are typically easy to cure are becoming harder to fight.

AURA senior medical advisor Professor John Turnidge spoke to RTRFM to discuss the issue of over-prescription.
