Politics in the Pub

Australia performs poorly in international rankings of student achievement. Moreover, the achievement gap between our highest and lowest is much greater than in countries where students achieve higher overall standards.

Maybe this all has to do with the massive funding gap, with private schools building lavish facilities, while public schools struggle for the essentials. One startling statistic from an Australian Education Union report is that, in 2023, five private schools spent more on buildings than 3300 state schools combined. Could reducing inequality improve the quality of education in Australia?

Madeleine Caffieri chats with Christian Mauri about The Fremantle Network staging Politics in the Pub, held at The Local Hotel on April 30 to discuss these issues.
