Protecting Our Facial Data

Our faces are a valuable source of identification and information about our person. Facial data is now able to be collected through the analysis of any high quality footage. This means that camera’s in public spaces, the images that we upload online, and any other picture or video of ourselves can now be used for facial recognition.

The Australian Privacy Act works to protect our facial information from unlawful harvesting. But many are concerned about the harmful ways that facial recognition can be used to harvest our data and access our lives.

PHD candidate Margarita Vladimirova joined Atikah Hurley On the Record to talk about how facial information is used, the ways that consent for facial recognition is implied to be given, and how we can be more aware of our information safety.
