Rolf de Heer and Mwajemi Hussein discuss ‘The Survival of Kindness’

Fresh from the official selection of the Berlin Film Festival, The Survival of Kindness is the latest film from Rolf dSurvival_of_kindness_OTRe Heer, the acclaimed director behind such films as The Tracker, Charlie’s Country and Bad Boy Bubby.

His latest effort follows an ambiguous character known only as ‘Blackwoman’ played by newcomer Mwajemi Hussein, who has been trapped in a cage in the middle of the desert and left to die.

Through sheer force of will, she breaks free and journeys through vast terrains to survive, only to be confronted by the discrimination and suffering she finds along the way.

Taking influence from the Black Lives Matter movement and the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic, de Heer has crafted a confronting yet immersive and fluid story about racism in Australia that is heavily rooted in the present.
