Seeking Asylum

Thursday 29th August / presented by Ed Williams

For some time now, asylum seeker policies have been problematic in Australian politics, and for Australian politicians.

And, one of Australia’s top legal minds has had the issue on his mind for some time.

Since the 1990’s Julian Burnside has moved from practicing primarily in Commercial Law and representing clients like Alan Bond and Rose Porteous, to increasing his pro-bono work and being a vocal supporter of human rights issues and the treatment of refugees in Australian detention centres.

We’re talking to this morning, following his decision to endorse the FederalGreens asylum seeker policy.

In reference to the treatment of refugees by political leadership and the Old parties, Mr Burnside says the current leaders are trying to outdo each other in cruelty of refugees and that if they treated animals this badly, they would be drummed out of office.

Ed Williams spoke with Julian Burnside on Morning Magazine.
