Shirley Le’s Funny Ethnics is not your usual coming of age story

Funny Ethnics is the debut novel from Vietnamese-Australian author Shirley Le who catapults readers into the sprawling city-within-a city that is Western Sydney.

The book follows Sylvia Nguyen, the only child of Vietnamese refugee parents; unexceptional student, exceptional self-doubter.

It’s a coming of age tale that reveals a side of Australia so ordinary that it’s entirely bizarre, highlighting the push and pull experience of second generation immigrants in a tousle between cultural traditions and the thirst to pave a path that is all their own.

RTRFMs Danielle Raffaele sat down with Shirley Le to chat about her debut novel and how started by asking what sparked the writing process.
