Sri Lankans at Sea

Thirteen nautical miles beyond the shores of Christmas Island, almost 160 asylum seekers are being detained in an Australian Customs vessel.

It’s understood the Sri Lankans left India last month and have spent two weeks on board the customs ship.

Lawyers representing the group in a High Court challenge against the Government’s powers to hold asylum seekers at sea allege the men, women and children on board are being held behind locked doors.

Claims that moved human rights lawyer and advocate Julian Burnside to accuse our Government of piracy.

Documents lodged in the High Court say families on board have been split up and are living in rooms without windows or room to move.
