Tanaya Harper on They Have Become Me
A consistent presence in the WA music scene, singer-songwriter and nostalgic folk-pop conjurer Tanaya Harper has (finally) released her debut full-length album They Have Become Me.
The record is a shoegazing indie-folk ode that deviates toward cinematic neo-classicism and is distinctly Tanaya’s.
Collaborating with composer and orchestral arranger Jared Yapp, the 12-track work explores the full breadth of Harper’s musical and personal life, creating silky worlds of strings that mimic Harper’s dreamy vocal harmonies and hooks and provide a wonderful counterpoint to the washed-out guitar riffs and synthesiser swoops that cruise through the record.
There are loud rock sections, but it’s not a rock record. There are unashamedly poppy songs and melodies, but it’s not a pop record. The space and minimalism of some tunes are like a folk recording, but it’s not a folk record. It’s a Tanaya Harper record that provides a snapshot of her influences and inspirations without being limited by them.
