The Language Lab With Amanda Hamilton-Hollaway: Borrowing in the English Language

On this instalment of Language Lab, Amanda Hamilton-Hollaway, a lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Western Australia, a member of UWA’s Language Lab, and a researcher at the University of Queensland, discusses the most common borrowings of words from other languages that have been integrated into English.

Amanda tells us the different types of words that have been borrowed, why and how they were borrowed and the effect this has on language, and cultures across society. Amanda reveals how English has changed and evolved over time to become a hybrid of many different languages, with each integration/borrowing having different contexts and reasoning, and how others have followed in English’s footsteps. We see many different groups of words have come to fruition through this phenomenon.
