The Soul of Charles

Thursday 11th December / posted by Chris Wheeldon

Chasing the dream can be a long and treacherous journey which soul prodigy Charles Bradley knows all too well.

After abandoning home at the mere age of 14, Bradley experienced homelessness and heartbreak firsthand while gigging across North American in the 60s and 70s.

A James Brown concert at the Apollo Theatre inspired Bradley’s style of soul funk later channelling Brown while performing under the stage name “Black Velvet”.

His debut album “No Time for Dreaming” is a collection of journalistic lyrics and tunes produced by singer/producer Tommy Brennack of Daptone Records.

In 2012, film “The Soul of America” was released, documenting Bradley’s life in retrospect.

Tanya Bunter caught up with Charles Bradley from his home in America.
