Turiya on their debut record Bliss

West Australian contemporary jazz trio Turiya have found Bliss.

A star-studded lineup of Michelle Smith on harp, Kate Pass on double bass and Talya Valenti on drums, the innovative group sees a rare incarnation of the harp melding original contemporary jazz with modern hip-hop, R&B, pop, and classical traditions.

The Boorloo incarnation of Turiya draws inspiration from Alice Coltrane’s ethereal harp glissandos and eclectic jazz compositions, combining their musical backgrounds and experiences, arranging the tracks that makeup Bliss together while still leaving space for individual expression and collaboration with West Australian peers such as POW! Negro.

Turiya’s debut album showcases the harp’s versatility as a lead instrument—a unique concept in jazz—with drums and double bass complementing its ethereal tones, evoking themes of romance, acceptance, and the journey that is life.

The record leaves listeners with a sense of peace, beauty, and bliss—a sublime offering in today’s world.

Michelle, Kate and Talya joined Pam on Brekky to share their Bliss and offer insight into the record’s creation.

Bliss was released independently on June 28 and launches at The Rechabite Thursday July 4.
