Understorey: Air Quality Alert

Wednesday 14th October / presented by Elizabeth PO’ Adrian Glamorgan

As clear as Perth skies may look, research published by the OECD last year highlights the alarming decline in Australia's air quality.  We are actually one of 14 countries where deaths from air pollution has been increasing.

To turn public health matters around, the report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development explicitly calls on governments to consider shifting investment from road transport, sending it instead to rail freight and rail passenger transport, to improve health and finance outcomes.  So how does the state government square this evidence with current state transport policy taking rural freight off rail onto trains, and sending more trucks into the Perth Freight Link?

Understorey speaks with Dr George Crisp from Doctors for the Environment Australia, about the damage being done by diesel and coal, and why a new approach to transport planning would mean not just better air quality for Perth, and fewer deaths from pollution - but also a more active and connected community.
