Understorey: Avoiding Hiroshima

Wednesday 9th August / presented by Elizabeth PO’ Adrian Glamorgan

Many survivors of the two atomic bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki (being remembered this week) put the horrors behind them, and got on with their lives.  Equally, many "hibakusha", like 88 year old Miyake Nobuo (right in the photo), do not want their horrifying experience to go unheeded.  They want the countries of the world - including Australia - to sign the new treaty to ban nuclear weapons.

Understorey reporter Adrian Glamorgan also speaks to "legacy successor," second generation hibakusha Mariko Higashino,  about her mother's and grandmother's stories of Hiroshima.  The details could shock: so how much should we tell?  Matt Douglas, from Peace Boat, helps out with translation.  (Photo: A.
