Understorey: Stay or Go?

Wednesday 20th November / presented by Elizabeth PO’ Adrian Glamorgan

The beauty and fecundity of Fukushima surprises the visitor. The mountains, rivers, forests, orchards and fields are so fertile. Yet Fukushima’s dilemma is that it’s in the midst of invisible danger: radiation circulating and dividing, driving families apart, putting communities into two minds. All thanks to Australian uranium, and what the National Diet Investigation Commission identified in 2012 as Fukushima's completely "man made" nuclear disaster. (Listen to last week's program for more on that!)

Should the Fukushima prefecture be completely evacuated? Is it right for children to be playing outside? What about the rise in thyroid cancers? And what of Western Australian uranium at Kintyre? The state government says it will bring local social and economic benefits. Should uranium ore stay in the ground? Or be sent via 4,600km road train trips to Port Adelaide to be shipped to India, China, Russia, or the United Arab Emirates, to a fate that could be one day as severe as Fukushima's?

Fukushima has its own dilemmas - do we have one of our own?
