Understorey: Environmentalists face WA anti-dissent laws

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has launched Australia’s candidacy for membership of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The MP for Curtin spoke on Monday in Canberra about the vital importance of “strong national human rights institutions.”

This is the face Australia puts to the world. However, Julie Bishop’s home state is poised to pass anti-dissent laws that criminalises peaceful protest and reverses onus of proof, in breach of international human rights guarantees.

These extraordinary proposed laws to crack down on protest are likely to impact on Western Australian conservationists involved in forest, mining, fracking, and bushland campaigns as well as opponents to the controversial Roe 8 freeway.

But could the anti-protest legislation really be about a government unconfident of its own case?
