Understorey – One Disaster to Another

Wednesday 11th December / presented by Elizabeth PO’ Adrian Glamorgan

From ERA’s toxic acid-uranium ore spill at Ranger on Saturday, to fuelling Fukushima and now threatening Tokyo, while stockpiling plutonium – you could be forgiven for thinking it was one disaster after another.

We hear what The Australian Greens Senator Scott Ludlama nd Liberal Party of Australia Senator Mathais Cormann told the Senate about Saturday’s ERA uranium-ore acid spill  We speak to Medical Association for the Prevention of War WA coordinator, Peter Underwood about the health effects and psychology of the nuclear industry. Anti-nuclear campaigner

Understorey speaks to Yoshima Hitosugi, communications manager for Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated, and Akira Kawasaki from Peace Boat helps us understand what is said, and not said, about the treatment of contractors, and the puzzle of why Japan has so much stored up plutonium.

Jo Vallentine warns the Fukushima disaster is not over yet. With about the 1300+ Fukushima spent fuel rods, each one three hundred kilos, and four metres long, and highly radioactive, that must be delicately pulled from the wreckage, posing a serious threat over the next months and years that some say could necessitate the evacuation of Tokyo.

From one disaster to another. And now, proposals to mine uranium in Western Australia.
