Understorey: Honouring Perth’s Precious Wetlands

Wednesday 10th February / posted by Chris Wheeldon

Our local wetlands welcome visitors from Manchuria, Siberia, and Japan every summer: a treasure trove of birds, insects, floral diversity and mammals . Noongar people valued and looked after these brilliant oases of wondrous ecosystems for thousands of years.

For the ecosystems to survive, wetland lovers say the state government must honour these remnants of remaining precious wetland.  For this to happen, the Minister for Water must provide adequate resources for departments to manage these systems, put in place conservation planning not yet implemented, and stop the tyranny of trivial decisions that argue for a "balanced" approach to legacy habitat
