Understorey: On The Verge of Knowing

Wednesday 2nd March / posted by Chris Wheeldon

In Western Australia we call the nature strip the “verge”.  But in Perth, when you try and put a little more nature into the verge, perhaps to do your bit for local wildlife and community, outcomes can be unpredictable, as Sue Jefferies found out recently.  But this is more than just about a succulent oasis that has been chain-sawed.

More generally, a number of local councils and the state government seem to be ignoring the Environmental Protection Authority's warnings about the urban heat sink, the federal government's international pledge to act on climate change, and Perth's growing vulnerability to drought.
