Understorey: Reporting ERA

Wednesday 29th October / presented by Elizabeth PO’ Adrian Glamorgan

The million litre spill of acidic slurry at ERA Ranger uranium mine within Kakadu last December raised community alarm about uranium mining practices, and also raised questions about how well governments will enforce regulations and ensure accountability. However, a just-completed independent report on the spill will not be for public consumption.  Rather, we’ve only been given the report recommendations.

With territory and federal governments’ firm support for the industry on the record, we take a look at the Estimates process in the federal Senate. It may sound all procedure, but it is democracy’s cross-examination of the government department involved.  From his vantage point in Kakadu yesterday, Dave Sweeney from the Australian Conservation Foundation reminds us we are citizens, not consumers or clients, and deserve the science and findings – not just the government’s conclusions.
