Web Rumors is reharmonising folk music through a new-wave lens

WA-born and currently Berlin-based new wave artist Web Rumors (aka Em Burrows) has released her first music in 2024.

The new single, titled Blithe Echo, is a sleek synth-pop cut that takes as its lyrical basis the traditional English folk song, Bright Phoebus, a popular hunting song originally attributed to James Hook in the late 18th century.

Burrows has spent the past year abroad, spending time in the UK and now Berlin, consolidating her early 80s influenced production techniques and individual sound while simultaneously exploring her long-standing love of British folk music.

Recorded, produced, and mixed by Burrows, Blithe Echo is the first cut from Web Rumors’ forthcoming album Travelling Circuits in which she explores the abstraction and recontextualisation of traditional British folk music.

Em is joined by RTRFM’s Emma Lucia to chat about Blithe Echo, Traveling Circuits and her relationship with English folk music.
