Youth and Self Harm: Decade Long Study Reveals Disturbing Statistics

Thursday 29th March / presented by Jorja Keay

A study that ran for ten years between University of Sydney and Macquarie University - considered to be the largest study conducted around Australia when it comes to youth injury/self-harm hospitalisations - has found children as young as six years old(!) are being taken to hospital for intentionally attempting self harm, and that about each year 1600 children are being hospitalised after they've attempted self-harm.

The study also revealed there's been an increase of about 400 per cent(!!) regarding self-harm hospitalisations within the youth demographic.

Rebecca Mitchell - Lead Author of this study, as well as Associate Professor for the Youth and Self Harm Division at Macquarie University's (at the centre for Australian Institute of Health Innovation) - spoke to us during The Mag today to give us more information regarding this study....
