Understorey: David Carline’s Mururoa

When the French decided to renew their nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific in the mid-1990s, Aboriginal David Carline of the Kooma/Gwamu people decided to join the struggle for justice and a nuclear free world and sail to the test site at Mururoa.  The protest supported the Indigenous movement, and helped focus international attention on the small atoll.  But the French military were not amused: and their bombing of Rainbow Warrior ten years before showed they weren't afraid of making peace campaigners pay. (Image: Collage by AG of David Carline, supplied, and Overview Mururoa atoll on December 23 2005 by FRED, Creative Commons 3.0) Un20180808Smallest
