Understorey: Climate 2018 ~Repairing the Democratic Climate

Federally, there has been political chaos and much noise, but little action on global warming.  State-wise, there's been equally ineffective climate quietness.  Both approaches may have contributed to community disillusionment about politicians' convictions and inaction on climate change. Yet robust economic modelling by Professor Tom Kompas points to a four degrees rise in global temperature set to cost the world economy US$23 trillion - or the equivalent of three or four 2008 Global Financial Crises per year - and that is only the cost to agriculture, not the damage done by extreme weather events.  In the absence of meaningful parliamentary leadership, long time Sydney community campaigners Richard and Maria Maguire believe building coalitions that advocate practical measures will contribute to bring about the change many want to see. Understorey interviews the Maguires to find out how they helped build and supported the Greater Western Sydney Energy Alliance, and the Sydney Alliance, to transform common climate struggles into community-wide solutions, and tilt towards a more integrative democracy.
