Understorey: Journey of the Regenerative Farmer

Charles Massy, author of The Call of the Reed Warbler, once owned a successful merino stud on his Monaro run, about an hour and a half south of Canberra.  However, as we learned in the last Understorey episode, Massy decided that his industrial agriculture was ruining his land, carried high financial costs, and missed so much that his country might be revealing.  He wanted to find a better way. In the course of his journey, Massy relinquished commonplace farming habits, and began learning from leaders in regenerative agriculture, and from the land itself.  The result has been a new farming compact, with reduced costs, and better planning.  In the course of establishing himself as a regenerative farmer, Massy has been able to restore environmental values, find rich inner meaning, and make surprising connections with elders and Aboriginal local history.
