Mindframe’s Guidelines for Safe Media Reporting
As important as it is for media reporting on suicide and mental ill-health, it needs to be done the right way. From classrooms in universities to newsrooms around the country, Mindframe are training and educating journalists around Australia on how to best report on these issues in the media.
Mindframe supports safe media reporting, portrayal and communication about suicide, mental ill-health, and alcohol and other drugs. The organisation have created guidelines for the media to help them consider the impact that news stories can have on those who are vulnerable or are at risk. These guidelines explore how to report on the issues accurately, in ways that can help to validate grief and loss as well as encourage help seeking.
Mindframe’s Acting Project Lead Elizabeth Parton spoke to Breakfast with Taylah to discuss these guidelines and protocols, as well as the implications that may arise if they are not followed and how to handle such a situation.
