Johanna Higgs: women’s rights in Afghanistan

Johanna Higgs is a cultural anthropologist from Perth, currently residing in Cambodia. Several years ago, Higgs travelled to two small villages in Afghanistan to interview men and women about women’s rights in the country and how they felt about it. At that time, the Taliban were just 30 minutes away and while it seemed that it was unlikely that they would regain control, the people were frightened.
Higgs is pleased the international media is placing so much focus on what is going to happen to the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan now that the Taliban have taken power again and spoke to Jeff Bullen to share what she has learned about women’s rights in Afghanistan in those two small villages and what the men and women she met had to say.
Johanna Higgs has a Master’s degree in international development and has completed her PhD in anthropology, about the child combatants of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) in Colombia.
