Berejiklian’s Conference Cancellation Causes Commotion In Fourth Estate

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced that the NSW’s Daily 11:00am COVID-19 press conference will cease from Monday, as the state recorded 1,542 new infections plus 9 deaths.

Although Ms Berejiklian mentioned she and the Health Minister would address the public “intermittently” through the implementation of daily videos outlining the latest information published via NSW Health, the decision has caused a ruckus across Australian media outlets – otherwise known as the ‘Fourth Estate’.

RTRFM’s Allan Boyd chatted to Dr Dennis Muller, who is a Senior Researcher from the Centre for Advancing Journalism at The University of Melbourne.

Together they discuss the origins of the ‘Fourth Estate’ and its importance in Western Democracies, including whether the impact of the NSW State Government shutting the door on the daily COVID Conferences is ‘good for Journalists or Journalism’.
