Western Australia To Push For Major Local Government Reform
You might think of them often, but every day Western Australia’s 137 local governments are busy keeping the wheels of modern civilization greased, regulated and spinning.
Collecting our rubbish, running libraries and markets, planting parks and gardens, including overseeing public events.
The WA State Government has recently announced major changes that will impact how local governments operate, with many of the changes aimed at bringing them into line with their east coast counterparts.
Changes include abolishing wards in small councils, and allowing electors to directly vote for their mayor.
On The Record presenter Tom Reynolds is joined in the studio with Dr Andy Asquith, who is a Local Government Scholar from Curtin University.
