The matriarch of rap BARKAA releases her debut EP Blak Matriarchy

Malyangapa, Barkindji artist Barkaa has had a spectacular couple of years. From her debut 2020 single For My Tittas to guesting on Rage, performing at Sydney Opera House and featuring in Vogue, the rapper has earned her title as the ‘Matriarch of Australian rap’, becoming highly respected by the hip-hop community and music industry alike.

Coming from humble beginnings, Barkaa‘s journey has been triumphant, using her music as a positive and uplifting outlet and giving voice to her community and First Nation’s ancestors.

Kailyn Crabbe from Out to Lunch caught up with the rapper on Breakfast with Taylah to chat all things her debut EP Blak Matriarchy, which came out last Friday.

The pair have a heartfelt discussion about Barkaa‘s struggles with addiction, the themes behind the new record and its exploration of black pride, pain, truth and joy along with the First Nations artists who have paved the way before her, and how she aims (and succeeds) to instal pride in her Blak brothers and sisters. Listen to the full chat below.
