“Backyard Beasties” Hits Western Australian Bookstores

Books tailored towards toddlers and children, written and crafted especially by the proficient authors are a rarity.

It takes persistent patience and technique associated with maintaining a youngling’s attention on a book from beginning to end.

“Backyard Beasties” is designed to teach us all about the croaking, barking, screeching, mewling creatures that share our homes. From beastie besties, like the Pomeranian and the Pussycat, to clucking chickens and licking lizards, the jewel-like illustrations will make this book an enjoyable read for the young.

On The Record presenter Jeff Bullen took the opportunity to catch up and chat with Author Helen Milroy, who is Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UWAHonorary Research Fellow at Telethon Kids Institute and a Commissioner with the National Mental Health Commission.

Together they sit down to discuss what goes into a good children’s book, how rhymes and rhythms helps to build upon early language and speech development, including the overall message behind the story.
