On the Record: Kharkiv medical student Sharry Gulzar flees Ukraine

In the past 20 days more than 2.5 million people have fled Ukraine, and among them have been thousands of migrants and international students – many of whom have also faced racial abuse while trying to reach safety.

One of those fleeing was medical student Sharry Gulzar.  He’d been living in Kharkiv for the past five years with his brother and his beloved cat Cherry. Caught up in the conflict they made a desperate and dangerous escape out of Ukraine.

In this interview with Tom Reynolds, Sharry Gulzar explains how it feels to go from being a student to a refugee in just a matter of weeks. And just a note: this interview has been edited with consent for brevity.
