Dr Leigh Straw: The Ballroom Murder

In August 1925 a woman called Audrey Jacob shot and murdered her former fiance in front of hundreds of guests at a charity ball in Perth’s Government House. Arrested with the smoking gun still in her hand it should have been an open and shut case of wilful murder.

And it probably would have been except for the intervention of Jacob’s lawyer Arthur Haynes. It’s a story about the inequities of class, sex, and justice that would give Broadway’s Chicago something to consider.

Academic, historian and author of The Ballroom Murder Dr Leigh Straw, chatted with RTRFM’s Danae Gibson about her latest research and writing.
