In Conversation with Jeremy James and Jack Martin
Actor-devisers, Jack Martin and Shaun Johnston, recently secured funding from Drug Aware, Healthway and Propel Youth Arts WA to present an interdisciplinary training workshop led by international theatre artist, Jeremy James, and subsequently to host an artist talk about “Embracing Risk and Vulnerability in the Creative Process” with James, dance artist, Bernadette Lewis and workshop participants.
James brings a breadth of experience as an actor, director, dramaturg and teaching artist working across 20+ countries over the past 25 years. Characterised for his tightly choreographed performances, he was notably a permanent member of Ariane Mnouchkine‘s celebrated ensemble, Le Théâtre du Soleil, for close to a decade, receiving significant public and critical acclaim for his work in Paris and at preeminent theatres and festivals internationally.
Through this skills development workshop and artist talk, Martin and Johnston offered a rare opportunity for young artists to explore James‘ unique approach to performance practice and pedagogy alongside a diversity of mid-career practitioners from the theatre, dance and music communities. With support from Co3 Contemporary Dance and WA Museum Boola Bardip, the workshop represents the first step in an ambitious new creative endeavour to build a permanent theatre ensemble in WA.
Jack Martin and Jeremy James joined Bec Bowman for Artbeat this morning to share details about how these creative initiatives came to light and what plans lie ahead for RARE BiRD ensemble.
