Greg Sestero: from surviving The Room to directing a horror movie, Miracle Valley
“Oh hai Mark” – one of the famous lines uttered in the cult movie, The Room, directed towards the character of Mark as played by actor and author Greg Sestero. Described as “the Citizen Kane of bad movies,” The Room, which was directed by Tommy Wiseau, celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year, a low-budget critical bomb that continues to be shown in cinemas worldwide to audiences eager to participate, yelling lines at the movie and throwing spoons at the screen.
Sestero wrote about making The Room in the book The Disaster Artist, which was also turned into a movie, and he is in Perth this week to introduce both The Room and his own directorial debut, Miracle Valley, a horror thriller about a photographer on holiday in the desert who stumbles across a secret, murderous cult. Both movies are screening Thursday 16 February at Luna Leederville with an introduction and a Q & A hosted by James Palm and featuring Sestero himself. Movie Squad’s Tristan Fidler was able to catch up with Greg Sestero on his hotel balcony to discuss Miracle Valley, his new movie, and the legacy of The Room. Tristan asked Greg whether he ever thought that a low budget movie he made in 2003 would have this much of a following?
