Dr. Di Evans explains research into Calf Roping

Calf roping is a common event that takes place at rodeos around Australia, and it’s not surprising to learn that these young animals are experiencing significant mental stress during these events. The findings of a recent report by the university of Sydney and the RSPCA Australia has revealed the extent to which calves experience distress, fear and pain while being placed in these roping events. The report which was published in the international journal, Animals, used video footage to assess calves for physical signs of strain and distress.

Currently calf roping is legal in WA, Queensland, Northern Territory, Tasmania and NSW, while banner in Victoria and the ACT.

To discuss this research further is co-author Dr. Di Evans, Senior Scientific Officer at RSPCA Australia joins Fiona Bartholomaeus
