The Language Lab with Dr Celeste Rodriguez Louro – the history of ‘zhoosh’

The cultural phenomenon zhoosh or jeuje, depending on how you spell it, is a word used to express the act of adding something special to something.

It also has an interesting origin story with the work being traced to Polari, a secret form of language, used mostly by gay men, which flourished in the early 20th century in the United Kingdom.

Dr Celeste Rodriguez Louro, Chair of Linguistics and Director of Language Lab at UWA talks us through the history and spelling of ‘zhoosh’ for On The Record with Pam Boland.
