RTRFM feature release: RVG’s third album Brain Worms

RVG’s highly anticipated third studio album Brain Worms is out, turning the spotlight onto the revered Melbourne band.

After a momentous first five years — finding critical acclaim for debut A Quality of Mercy, landing on countless end-of-year best of lists, and playing alongside some of the world’s biggest acts in Pixies, Kurt Vile, Pete Doherty, Sleaford Mods, Camp Cope, Shame, and more — RVG released second album Feral as the world was locking down. Feral received critical acclaim and became a favourite of critics and punters alike.

Past accolades aside, Brain Worms appears to be the band at its most confident. They’ve moved just past their influences, pushed themselves, and tried new things. The record is arguably their most expansive, incorporating more synths, strings, new sound palettes and directions and rounding off some of the band’s angular post-punk sound. Listeners are greeted by new facets and directions, weaving in gothic-western stylings, and expanded instrumental arrangements.

Lead singer and lyricist Romy Vager talks to RTRFM’s Matt Perrett about the record, starting off the two-part chat by touching on the differences between the preparation for Brain Worms compared the band’s past releases.
