The Australian National Dictionary Centre asking for new colloquial names for Flora & Fauna

Australia’s nicknames for its animals have become almost as iconic as the creatures themselves. Think bin chickens, maggies and chooks…  other nicknames are not so common, like Noah’s Arks (sharks). Many colloquial names for flora and fauna have already been recorded, but experts at The Australian National University (ANU) and The Australian National Dictionary Centre (ANDC) are looking for new contributions, with a focus on plants and animals.

ANDC researcher Mark Gwynn joined Pam Boland on Breakfast to talk all things weird and wonderful Australian colloquialisms.

You can contribute your own colloquial names to ANDC’s Flora and Fauna Appeal now.
