Wednesday find profundity in the mundane with their noisy brand of rock

American indie-rock band Wednesday have made a name by channelling melancholy 90’s nostalgia into dense squalls of noisy shoegaze and rock.

The group has embarked on a world tour off the back of a critically successful 2023, playing at The Rechabite alongside MJ Lendermen for Perth Festival on February 27.

The band’s powerhouse lead singer and guitarist Karly Hartzman spins poignantly observational, vivid portraits of life in dead-end small-town America with a voice that is unrefined and full of emotion.

Soundtracked by gritty, rip-roaring country rock that is somewhere between the wailing scuzz of nineties shoegaze and classic country twang, the band’s latest album Rat Saw God and live apperances demand that listeners take notice.

RTRFM’s Tim Fairbanks joins Karly ahead of the band’s appearance at Perth Festival to chat about their music and 2024 world tour.
