The Language Lab with Dr Celeste Rodriguez Louro: Keeping Languages Alive

No matter what language you speak, you use it to convey a message. But not all languages are spoken equally. It’s estimated that 1.5 billion people speak English, which is just under 20% of the world.

It might surprise you, but there are roughly 7000 languages still in use today, many of which are indigenous languages that are ancestrally connected to specific countries or land.

Madeleine Mitchell chats with Dr Celeste Rodriguez Louro about language maintenance, and how many languages spoken by some minority groups are actually endangered and at risk of being replaced by more commonly spoken languages.
